How this calculator works
This calculator applies to STT-paid listed equity shares and equity mutual funds only. It does not apply to unlisted shares, property, debt funds, or other capital assets, which follow different capital gains rules.
Capital gain = Sell value − Buy value.
If your holding period is 12 months or less, the gain is a Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG), taxed at a flat 20% under Section 111A.
If your holding period is more than 12 months, the gain is a Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG), taxed at 12.5% on the amount above a ₹1.25 lakh exemption under Section 112A: Tax = max(0, Gain − ₹1,25,000) × 12.5%.
Important: the ₹1.25 lakh LTCG exemption applies once per financial year, across all your Section 112A long-term gains combined — not per transaction. This calculator evaluates the transaction you enter in isolation. If you've already used up some or all of the exemption against other gains in the same financial year, your actual tax on this transaction could be higher than shown here.
STCG vs LTCG at a glance
| Holding period | Classification | Rate | Exemption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 months or less | STCG (Section 111A) | 20% | None |
| More than 12 months | LTCG (Section 112A) | 12.5% | ₹1.25 lakh per financial year |
These rates and the exemption scope apply specifically to STT-paid listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds. Debt funds, unlisted shares, real estate, and other assets are taxed under different capital gains rules not covered by this tool.
Capital gains from shares and mutual funds need to be reported correctly in your ITR. Shunya's CA team can help you file it right.
Talk to a CA →What's the STCG rate on listed shares?
20% for holdings of 12 months or less, under Section 111A of the Income Tax Act.
What's the LTCG rate on listed shares?
12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh per financial year, under Section 112A of the Income Tax Act.
Is the ₹1.25 lakh exemption per transaction or per year?
It's per financial year, across all your Section 112A long-term capital gains combined — not per transaction. This calculator shows the tax on one transaction in isolation, so if you have other LTCG in the same year, your actual exemption available for this transaction may be lower or already used up.
Does this apply to unlisted shares or property?
No — different capital gains rules and rates apply to unlisted shares, property, and other assets. This tool is specifically for STT-paid listed equity shares and equity mutual funds.
This tool is for quick estimation only and is not a substitute for professional tax advice. It doesn't account for other capital gains you may have in the same financial year, set-offs, or carried-forward losses. For your specific situation, consult a practicing CA.
