How this calculator works

Your absolute gain is the difference between what you sold your shares for and what you paid for them, multiplied by the number of shares: Gain = (Sell price − Buy price) × Shares.

Your return percentage measures that gain relative to what you invested, regardless of how many shares you held: Return % = (Sell price − Buy price) ÷ Buy price × 100.

This is a simple point-to-point return on the price alone — it doesn't factor in how long you held the stock, any dividends received, or transaction costs like brokerage and STT. It's meant to give you a quick, clear read on how a trade performed.

Why return % matters as much as rupee gain

A ₹5,000 gain looks the same whether you invested ₹10,000 or ₹10,00,000 — but the return percentage tells a very different story in each case. Comparing return percentage across trades, rather than just the rupee amount, is usually the more useful way to judge how well a particular investment performed.

Frequently Asked Question

How is stock return percentage calculated?

Return % = (Sell price − Buy price) ÷ Buy price × 100. This calculator also multiplies the per-share gain by your number of shares to show the absolute rupee gain, alongside the percentage return.

Frequently Asked Question

Does this include brokerage or STT?

No — this is gross return before transaction costs. Brokerage, Securities Transaction Tax (STT), exchange charges, and GST on brokerage will all reduce your actual net return slightly below what's shown here.

Frequently Asked Question

Is this the same as CAGR?

No — this is a simple point-to-point return, not annualized. It doesn't account for how long you held the stock. If you want to see the annualized growth rate for a multi-year holding, use the CAGR Calculator instead.

Frequently Asked Question

Does this account for dividends received?

No — this is price-return only, based purely on the buy and sell price you enter. If you also received dividends while holding the stock, use the Stock Dividend Calculator to work out that income separately and add it to your total return.
