How the tax audit process works online — from documents to filing

Quick Answer

An online tax audit typically follows four steps: share your turnover and documents over WhatsApp or email, the CA reviews your books and confirms which form applies, Form 3CD is prepared and cross-checked against your records, and the report is signed with a UDIN and uploaded on the e-filing portal — usually completed within three working days once documents are complete.

Step 1 — initial applicability check

Before anything else, a quick review of your turnover (or broker P&L, for traders) confirms whether Section 44AB actually applies and, if so, which threshold triggered it. This step alone often takes minutes and can save you from starting a process you don't actually need.

Step 2 — document collection and book review

Once applicability is confirmed, you share the documents from our documents checklist — bank statements, sales/purchase records, and anything specific to your business type. The CA reviews these against your books, flags any gaps or inconsistencies, and confirms whether Form 3CA or Form 3CB applies to your entity.

Step 3 — Form 3CD preparation

This is the most detailed step: every clause of Form 3CD is populated and checked against your actual records — depreciation, statutory dues, cash transactions, related-party payments, and the dozens of other particulars the form requires. Any issues (a cash transaction over the limit, a mismatch between GST turnover and books) get raised with you here, before the report is finalised.

Step 4 — UDIN, signing, and portal filing

Once the CA is satisfied with the numbers, the report is signed and a UDIN is generated and attached — this is what makes the report verifiable and prevents forged filings. The CA uploads Form 3CA/3CB and 3CD on the income tax e-filing portal using their own login, and you then log into your own portal account to accept the filing, completing the process.

Frequently Asked Question

How long does the whole process actually take once I've sent my documents?

For straightforward cases with reasonably organised records, three working days from complete document receipt to filing is realistic. The variable that affects this most is how clean your books are — if bank statements don't reconcile with your sales register, or cash transactions need investigation, expect the timeline to extend while those specific issues are resolved, since the audit can't be signed off until the underlying numbers are accurate.
