Tax audit documents checklist — what to keep ready

Quick Answer

At minimum, a tax audit needs bank statements for the full year, sales and purchase records or an accounting software export, the prior year's audit report and ITR if applicable, and GST returns if registered. F&O traders additionally need their broker's P&L and contract notes, since turnover can't be verified from bank statements alone.

For businesses

Bank statements for every operating account across the full financial year, sales and purchase registers (or a clean export from Tally, Zoho Books, or similar), the prior year's audit report and ITR for continuity of opening balances, GST returns (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B) if registered, fixed asset details and depreciation schedules, and details of any loans or deposits taken or given during the year.

For professionals

Gross receipts records (invoices raised, fee receipts, or a consolidated statement from a hospital/clinic/firm if applicable), bank statements, and — if moving from presumptive taxation to regular books, or vice versa — records from the prior year showing which method was used, since this affects the opt-out analysis.

For F&O and intraday traders

Bank statements alone won't show your true turnover — you need your broker's annual P&L or tax P&L export, and contract notes or trade-level ledgers if the summary P&L doesn't break down individual trades clearly enough to verify the turnover computation. If you trade across multiple brokers, statements from each are needed separately.

What's worth digitising before you start

If your records are still on paper or scattered across WhatsApp and email, spend an hour consolidating them into folders by category (bank statements, sales, purchases, GST) before sending anything to your CA. This single step is usually what determines whether an audit takes three days or three weeks.

Frequently Asked Question

What if I'm missing some of these documents?

Most gaps are recoverable — bank statements can be re-downloaded from net banking, GST returns are available on the GST portal, and broker P&L statements can usually be regenerated from your trading account. The one thing that's harder to reconstruct after the fact is a clean sales/purchase register if your bookkeeping was informal during the year; flag this to your CA early so they can help rebuild it from bank and GST data rather than discovering the gap midway through.
