Tax audit due date for AY 2026-27 was 21 October 2026. Missed it? What to do before your ITR (due 21 November 2026)
For FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), the tax audit report (Form 3CA/3CB along with Form 3CD) was due by 21 October 2026, extended from 30 September 2026. That date has now passed. The ITR for audit cases is still due by 21 November 2026, extended from 31 October 2026. Missed 21 October? You can still file a belated audit report. File it as soon as you can, and before your ITR.
Why there are two separate dates
The audit report and the ITR are filed separately, with the audit report due first. This gives the CA time to complete the examination and file Form 3CD before the same figures are used to prepare and file the return itself. Filing the audit report late doesn't automatically extend the ITR date — both deadlines run independently unless CBDT extends them.
CBDT has extended these dates before
In several past years, CBDT has extended tax audit and ITR deadlines by a few weeks, usually in response to portal issues, natural disasters, or significant last-minute rule changes. This history is exactly why waiting for an extension was risky: it was never guaranteed, and filing in the final days left no room for the corrections that audits routinely surface.
Missed 21 October? File the audit report before your ITR (due 21 Nov)
Don't stop. The audit report date has passed, but you can still file a belated report. Get it filed as soon as you can, and before you file your ITR. For audit cases, the ITR is due 21 November 2026. That gives you a few weeks, not a few months.
A late or missing audit report can attract a penalty under Section 271B unless you can show a reasonable cause for the delay. See how the Section 271B penalty works for how it is worked out. Our guide to belated and revised tax audit reports explains how a late report is filed.
To move fast, get your books reconciled first: bank statements matched, sales and purchase registers final. The audit moves quickly once the numbers are settled. Keep the tax audit documents checklist handy.
If CBDT extends the tax audit deadline, does the ITR deadline for audit cases move automatically too?
Not necessarily — CBDT notifications can extend one date, both, or neither, depending on the reason for the extension. In practice, when the audit deadline has been extended in past years, the ITR deadline for audit cases has often followed, but this isn't guaranteed by any fixed rule. Always check the specific notification rather than assuming one extension implies the other.
I missed the 21 October deadline. Can I still file?
Yes. You can still file a belated tax audit report after 21 October 2026. File it as soon as you can, and before your ITR, which for audit cases is due 21 November 2026. A late report can attract a penalty under Section 271B unless there was a reasonable cause for the delay.
