Startup India registration online — step-by-step DPIIT recognition process

Quick Answer

You apply for Startup India recognition through the Startup India portal (startupindia.gov.in) — there is no government fee. Incorporate your entity first if you haven't already, create a founder profile on the portal, submit a recognition application with entity details and a written description of your innovation and business model, upload supporting documents, and wait for DPIIT to review it. Most complete, clearly-written applications receive the recognition certificate within 2 to 4 weeks.

Who can apply for Startup India recognition

Before you start the application, confirm your entity actually qualifies. DPIIT recognition requires all of the following:

Step 1 — incorporate your entity first

Before applying for DPIIT recognition, your entity must already be incorporated as a Private Limited Company, LLP, or registered Partnership Firm. DPIIT recognition is layered on top of an existing, validly incorporated entity — it is not itself a company registration process.

Step 2 — create a Startup India profile

Register on the Startup India portal using an email ID and mobile number, creating a founder profile that can later be linked to the recognition application for the entity.

Step 3 — submit the recognition application

From the portal dashboard, initiate a new DPIIT recognition application, providing entity details (CIN/LLPIN, incorporation date, registered address, directors/partners), and a written description of the business — specifically addressing how the business is innovative, or how it has a scalable model with high potential for employment or wealth creation. This write-up is the part of the application DPIIT scrutinises most closely — a generic or copy-pasted description is the single most common reason applications get sent back for clarification or rejected outright.

Step 4 — upload supporting documents

Upload the Certificate of Incorporation, PAN, a brief write-up or pitch deck describing the product/service and business model, and, if available, evidence like patents, awards, or media coverage that supports the innovation claim (not mandatory, but strengthens the application). See the full documents checklist for the exact list by entity type.

Step 5 — recognition certificate issuance

Once submitted, the application is reviewed by DPIIT. If the write-up and documents clearly establish eligibility, the recognition certificate is typically issued within 2 to 4 weeks. If the reviewing team has questions about the innovation claim or finds the write-up too generic, they may seek clarification, which extends the timeline.

What to do immediately after recognition

Once recognised, the entity should separately apply for the Section 80-IAC income tax exemption (this is not automatic just from DPIIT recognition — it requires an additional application and approval from the Inter-Ministerial Board) and for Angel Tax exemption under Section 56, if applicable, since these carry their own eligibility conditions and application steps beyond basic DPIIT recognition.

Frequently Asked Question

Is there a government fee to apply for Startup India recognition?

No. DPIIT recognition itself is free — there is no government fee to submit or process the application on the Startup India portal. Costs only come in if you engage a CA or consultant to prepare the application and write-up for you, or when you separately apply for paid benefits like patent fee rebates.

Frequently Asked Question

Can I apply for Startup India recognition before incorporating my company?

No. Your entity must already be incorporated as a Private Limited Company, LLP, or registered Partnership Firm before you can apply for DPIIT recognition — recognition is layered on top of an existing entity, not a substitute for incorporation.

Frequently Asked Question

Does getting DPIIT recognition automatically give me the income tax exemption?

No. DPIIT recognition is a prerequisite for the Section 80-IAC income tax exemption, but the exemption itself requires a separate application, reviewed and approved by an Inter-Ministerial Board. Recognition alone unlocks benefits like self-certification and easier public procurement access, but the tax holiday under Section 80-IAC needs its own additional application and approval.
