Startup India recognition validity and the 10-year age limit
DPIIT recognition remains valid as long as the entity continues to satisfy the underlying eligibility conditions — primarily, it must not have completed 10 years since incorporation, and its turnover must not have exceeded Rs 100 crore in any financial year. There is no periodic renewal application; recognition simply ceases to apply once either condition is breached, at which point the entity loses access to startup-specific benefits going forward.
No renewal application — recognition just lapses
Unlike some certifications that require periodic renewal filings, DPIIT recognition doesn't have a formal renewal process. The entity remains recognised for as long as it continues to meet the eligibility conditions; once it crosses 10 years from incorporation or exceeds the turnover cap in any year, recognition effectively ceases without any specific 'expiry notice' process.
Tracking your own 10-year window
Since there's no automated renewal reminder, startups should track their own incorporation anniversary and plan around the 10-year cutoff — particularly for time-sensitive benefits like the Section 80-IAC tax exemption, which must be claimed for 3 years within that same 10-year window.

Talk to a CA →What happens to benefits already claimed after recognition lapses
Tax exemptions or other benefits already validly claimed during the period the entity held recognition generally remain valid — losing recognition due to crossing the age or turnover threshold doesn't retroactively invalidate benefits properly claimed while the entity was still eligible. It does mean no new startup-specific benefits can be claimed going forward.
Turnover monitoring as an ongoing compliance task
Because a single year exceeding Rs 100 crore turnover can end DPIIT eligibility permanently (not just for that year), fast-growing startups approaching this threshold should monitor it closely and plan any remaining startup-specific applications (like the 80-IAC exemption, if not yet claimed) before the threshold is likely to be crossed.
Does a change in business activity affect recognition?
A material change in business activity doesn't automatically revoke recognition, but if DPIIT determines during any review that the entity no longer meets the innovation/scalability character it was recognised for, or discovers the original application involved misrepresentation, recognition can be withdrawn — a separate and more serious scenario than simply ageing past the 10-year window.
Do I need to renew my DPIIT recognition certificate periodically?
No. There is no periodic renewal application for DPIIT recognition — it remains valid as long as the entity continues to meet the underlying eligibility conditions (primarily the 10-year age limit and Rs 100 crore turnover cap). Recognition simply lapses once either condition is breached, without a formal renewal or expiry notice process in between.
