Belated ITR vs revised ITR — what's the difference?

Quick Answer

A belated return (Section 139(4)) is what you file when you miss the original due date — it's a late original filing, subject to a late fee. A revised return (Section 139(5)) corrects errors in any return already filed, whether that original return was on time or itself belated. Both currently share the same outer deadline of 31 December of the relevant assessment year (or before assessment completion, if earlier).

When you need a belated return

If you haven't filed any return for the year and the 31 July (or applicable audit) deadline has passed, whatever you file next is a belated return under Section 139(4). It's still your first and only return for the year at that point — 'belated' describes the timing, not a correction of an earlier filing.

When you need a revised return

If you've already filed a return (on time or belated) and later discover an error — a missed income source, an incorrect deduction claim, a wrong bank account for refund — you file a revised return under Section 139(5), which replaces the earlier filing entirely for that assessment year.

You can revise a belated return too

A common misconception is that once you've filed late, you're stuck with whatever you submitted. In fact, a belated return can itself be revised if an error is found, using the same Section 139(5) revised-return process, subject to the same overall deadline.

How many times can you revise

There's no fixed cap on the number of times a return can be revised within the permitted window, provided each revision is filed before the deadline (31 December of the assessment year, or before assessment is completed by the department, whichever is earlier). Repeated revisions, though, can attract closer scrutiny, so it's worth getting the return right rather than treating revision as a routine step.

What a revised return cannot fix

A revised return can correct factual and computational errors, but it cannot retroactively restore benefits that were lost specifically because the original filing was belated — for instance, if a business loss couldn't be carried forward because the original return was filed late, revising the return afterward does not reinstate that carry-forward right.

Frequently Asked Question

If I filed my ITR late, can I still revise it later if I find a mistake?

Yes. A belated return can be revised just like an on-time return, using the same Section 139(5) process, as long as it's done before 31 December of the relevant assessment year (or before the department completes assessment, if that happens sooner). However, revising a belated return does not undo consequences that were tied specifically to the original filing being late — such as the loss of carry-forward for certain losses.
