ITR filing documents required — complete checklist

Quick Answer

Every ITR filing needs PAN, Aadhaar, Form 26AS, and the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Beyond that, the checklist depends on income type: Form 16 for salaried employees, capital gains statements for investors, and books of account or presumptive income records for business owners and professionals.

Documents needed by everyone

PAN card, Aadhaar card (linked to PAN), bank account details for refund credit, Form 26AS (a consolidated tax credit statement showing TDS/TCS deducted on your behalf), and the Annual Information Statement (AIS), which aggregates financial transactions reported to the department by banks, employers, and other institutions.

For salaried individuals

Form 16 from your employer (Part A shows TDS deducted; Part B shows the salary breakup and any deductions considered by the employer), rent receipts and the landlord's PAN if claiming HRA above a threshold, and home loan interest certificate if applicable.

For those with capital gains

Capital gains statements from your stockbroker, mutual fund platform, or registrar — most brokers now provide a consolidated annual capital gains statement. For property sales, the sale deed, purchase deed, and details of any exemption claimed under Sections 54, 54F, or 54EC.

For freelancers and business owners

Books of account (if maintaining regular books) or gross receipts and expense summaries (if opting for presumptive taxation), bank statements for the business account, GST returns if registered, and any TDS certificates (Form 16A) issued by clients who deducted tax on payments to you.

For claiming deductions

Proof of Section 80C investments (PPF passbook, ELSS statements, life insurance premium receipts), health insurance premium receipts for Section 80D, and education loan interest certificates for Section 80E, if claiming these under the old regime.

Frequently Asked Question

What is Form 26AS and why does it matter for ITR filing?

Form 26AS is a consolidated statement, maintained by the income tax department, showing all tax deducted or collected on your behalf (TDS/TCS) by employers, banks, and other payers, along with details of advance tax and self-assessment tax paid. It's essentially proof that tax has already been paid against your PAN — reconciling your own income records against Form 26AS (and the broader AIS) before filing helps ensure you claim the correct TDS credit and avoid mismatches that can delay your refund or trigger a notice.
