How to file GSTR-9 annual return online — step-by-step
GSTR-9 is filed on the GST portal by selecting the financial year, reviewing the data auto-populated from your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings across each table, reconciling those figures against your books, paying any additional liability that comes to light, and submitting with a Digital Signature Certificate or Electronic Verification Code.
Step 1 — log in and select the financial year
Log into the GST portal, go to Services > Returns > Annual Return, and select the specific financial year you're filing GSTR-9 for. The portal will show whether the return is available to be filed and its current status.
Step 2 — review auto-populated data across the tables
GSTR-9 auto-populates a large share of its tables — outward supplies, inward supplies, and input tax credit — from your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings for the year. Go through each table carefully rather than accepting the auto-populated figures at face value; auto-population reflects what was filed through the year, including any errors in those original filings.
Step 3 — reconcile against your books of account
Compare the auto-populated and manually entered figures against your books — sales register, purchase register, and ITC ledger — for the full financial year. This is the step where turnover mismatches, unclaimed or excess ITC, and HSN summary gaps typically surface. See our guide on common GSTR-9 errors for what to look out for specifically.

Talk to a CA →Step 4 — pay any additional tax liability
If the reconciliation in Step 3 reveals tax that should have been paid during the year but wasn't, it can be paid through Form DRC-03 along with applicable interest. GSTR-9 itself doesn't allow claiming fresh input tax credit that wasn't availed during the year through the regular return cycle.
Step 5 — check the late fee, if applicable
If you're filing after the due date, the portal computes the applicable late fee automatically based on the number of days of delay and your turnover slab. Confirm this amount before proceeding to payment — see our guide on GSTR-9 due dates and late fees for how the calculation works.
Step 6 — submit and file with DSC or EVC
Once every table has been reviewed and reconciled, file the return using either a Digital Signature Certificate (mandatory for companies and LLPs) or an Electronic Verification Code sent as an OTP to the registered mobile number (available for proprietorships and partnerships). Filing generates an Application Reference Number confirming submission.
Common mistakes to check before submitting
Before final submission: confirm the financial year selected is correct, verify that ITC figures tie back to GSTR-2B and your purchase register, double-check the HSN summary is complete, and remember that GSTR-9 generally cannot be revised once filed — so it's worth a final review pass rather than treating submission as reversible.
Can I revise GSTR-9 after filing?
No. GSTR-9 cannot be revised once filed on the GST portal. Errors identified afterward are generally addressed through adjustments in a later year's return or through voluntary payment of any shortfall via Form DRC-03, rather than a revision of the filed return itself — which is exactly why a careful reconciliation before submission matters more for GSTR-9 than for returns that can be corrected later.
