📋

GSTR-9 Annual Return

all regular taxpayers

A consolidated summary of all outward and inward supplies, tax paid, and ITC claimed across the financial year — filed by every regular taxpayer, regardless of turnover (subject to the optional-filing threshold in force for that year).

🔍

GSTR-9C Reconciliation

turnover above ₹5 crore

A statement reconciling your GSTR-9 figures with your audited financial statements. Required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹5 crore in the financial year — self-certified by the taxpayer since FY 2020-21.

⚠️

Common Mismatches

where filings go wrong

ITC claimed in GSTR-3B not matching GSTR-2B, outward supplies in books not matching GSTR-1, and HSN-wise summary errors are the most common reasons annual returns get flagged. Our CA reconciles all three before filing.

"As a services business our GSTR-1 and books never quite matched because of a few credit notes. Shunya sorted the reconciliation out and explained exactly why the numbers had drifted."

common questions

What is the difference between GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C?

GSTR-9 is the annual return that consolidates all your monthly/quarterly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings for the financial year into a single summary. GSTR-9C is a reconciliation statement that matches your GSTR-9 figures against your audited financial statements — it's required only above a turnover threshold and is self-certified by the taxpayer.

Who needs to file GSTR-9?

Every regular taxpayer registered under GST must file GSTR-9 for each financial year, unless specifically exempted (composition taxpayers, casual taxable persons, and a few other categories follow different rules). Filing has been made optional for taxpayers below a turnover threshold in several recent years via government notification — we confirm your exact requirement based on your turnover before filing.

Is GSTR-9C mandatory for my business?

GSTR-9C applies to taxpayers whose aggregate turnover in the financial year crosses ₹5 crore. Since FY 2020-21 it has been self-certified by the taxpayer rather than requiring separate CA/CMA certification, though most businesses above the threshold still want a CA to review the reconciliation before it's filed.

What is the due date for GSTR-9 and what happens if I file late?

The statutory due date is 31 December following the end of the financial year, though the government has extended it in past years via notification. Late filing attracts a late fee per day of delay, subject to a turnover-based cap that is periodically revised — we confirm the applicable rate at the time of filing.

What documents do I need to share for GSTR-9 / GSTR-9C filing?

All GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filed for the financial year, your GSTR-2B/ITC ledger, HSN-wise summary of outward supplies, and — for GSTR-9C — your audited financial statements (P&L and balance sheet). Once you sign up, our CA sends you an exact checklist based on your turnover and filing history.

What does Shunya charge for GSTR-9 / GSTR-9C filing?

₹1,999 for GSTR-9 only (turnover up to ₹5 crore), and ₹5,999 for GSTR-9 with GSTR-9C reconciliation (turnover above ₹5 crore) — one-time, per financial year. This covers reconciliation of books against returns, ITC review, preparation, and portal filing.
