GST registration cancellation — how and when to cancel your GSTIN
GST registration can be cancelled by the taxpayer (voluntary cancellation, via Form REG-16), or by the department (if returns are not filed for a prescribed period, among other reasons). After cancellation is approved, a final return (Form GSTR-10) must be filed within three months, declaring closing stock and any tax payable on it.
When voluntary cancellation makes sense
Common situations: the business is closing down entirely, turnover has genuinely fallen and is expected to stay below the mandatory threshold with no e-commerce or interstate activity, the business structure has changed (e.g., a proprietorship converting to a company, requiring a fresh GSTIN under the new entity), or GST registration was taken voluntarily but is no longer needed.
Filing the cancellation application (Form REG-16)
The taxpayer applies through the GST portal via Form REG-16, providing the reason for cancellation, the date from which cancellation is sought, and details of stock held, along with any tax liability on that stock and on capital goods. Any pending returns must generally be filed before or alongside the cancellation application.

Talk to a CA →Department review and cancellation order
The jurisdictional officer reviews the application and, if in order, issues a cancellation order (Form REG-19) specifying the effective date of cancellation. Any pending dues, including tax on closing stock, must be cleared as part of this process.
Filing the final return: GSTR-10
Within three months of the date of cancellation (or the date of the cancellation order, whichever is later), the taxpayer must file Form GSTR-10, the final return, declaring the stock of inputs and capital goods held on the date of cancellation and the corresponding tax liability. Missing this deadline attracts its own late fee, separate from the return-cycle late fees during active registration.
Cancellation by the department (non-voluntary)
The department can cancel a registration on its own initiative — most commonly for continuous non-filing of returns over a prescribed period, or for registration obtained by fraud or misrepresentation. A taxpayer whose registration is cancelled this way can apply for revocation within a specified window by clearing pending returns and dues, similar in spirit to restoring a struck-off company.
What happens if I don't file GSTR-10 after my GST registration is cancelled?
Missing the GSTR-10 final return deadline (three months from the date of cancellation) attracts a late fee, and the department can also issue a notice demanding the return be filed, potentially followed by a best-judgment assessment if it continues to be ignored. Filing GSTR-10 promptly after cancellation closes out the registration cleanly and avoids this follow-up compliance risk.
