How this calculator works
Car loans in India are almost always repaid on the reducing balance method — the standard EMI formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)n / ((1+r)n − 1), where P is your loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the number of monthly instalments (years × 12).
Total payment over the loan's life is simply EMI × n. Total interest is total payment minus the loan amount (principal). Each EMI you pay is split between interest and principal — early instalments are interest-heavy, and the principal share grows as the loan matures.
The interest rate here is a plain input, not a fixed figure — enter whatever rate your bank or dealer has quoted you, since rates vary by lender, loan tenure, and your credit profile.

Talk to a CA →How is car loan EMI calculated?
EMI is calculated using the standard reducing-balance formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)n / ((1+r)n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the number of monthly instalments. Each EMI pays off a mix of interest and principal, with the interest portion shrinking and the principal portion growing over the loan's life.
What's a typical car loan tenure?
Car loan tenures in India are usually 3 to 7 years, though the exact range depends on the lender and the vehicle. A shorter tenure means a higher EMI but less total interest paid; a longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest over the loan's life.
Is a car loan secured?
Yes — the car itself serves as collateral for the loan, which is why car loan interest rates are typically lower than unsecured personal loan rates. If the loan isn't repaid, the lender has the right to repossess the vehicle.
Does the calculator include on-road price extras like insurance and registration?
No — this calculator only computes EMI on the loan amount you enter. Your car's on-road price (which includes insurance, registration, and other charges) may be higher than your financed loan amount if you're making a down payment, so enter the actual amount you're borrowing, not the full on-road price.
