How to file GSTR-3B online in India — step-by-step
GSTR-3B is filed on the GST portal by logging in, navigating to Returns Dashboard, selecting the tax period, entering outward supplies and eligible input tax credit (largely auto-populated from GSTR-2B), offsetting liability against available credit and cash ledger balance, and submitting with DSC or EVC (OTP-based verification).
Step 1 — log in and select the tax period
Log into the GST portal, go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard, and select the financial year and the specific month or quarter for which you're filing.
Step 2 — enter outward supplies and reverse charge liability
Declare total taxable outward supplies (sales), zero-rated supplies (exports), exempt supplies, and any inward supplies liable to reverse charge, split by tax rate (CGST/SGST/IGST).
Step 3 — review auto-populated input tax credit from GSTR-2B
The portal auto-populates eligible input tax credit based on your suppliers' GSTR-1 filings, consolidated in GSTR-2B. Review this carefully against your own purchase records — credit claimed in GSTR-3B that doesn't match GSTR-2B is a leading trigger for department notices and credit reversal demands.

Talk to a CA →Step 4 — offset liability against credit and cash ledger
The system calculates net tax payable after offsetting available input tax credit. Any shortfall must be paid via the electronic cash ledger — generate a challan and pay through net banking, NEFT/RTGS, or over-the-counter, if the cash ledger balance isn't already sufficient.
Step 5 — submit and file with DSC or EVC
Once the return is finalised, it's submitted using either a Digital Signature Certificate (mandatory for companies and LLPs) or an Electronic Verification Code sent as an OTP to the registered mobile number (available for proprietorships and partnerships). Filing generates an Application Reference Number confirming submission.
Common mistakes to check before submitting
Before final submission, verify that declared outward supplies match your books and, ideally, your GSTR-1 for the same period; confirm ITC claimed doesn't exceed what's reflected in GSTR-2B; and double-check the tax period selected is correct — a return filed against the wrong period is difficult to correct after submission.
Can I claim input tax credit in GSTR-3B that isn't showing in GSTR-2B?
You can technically enter it, but claiming credit not reflected in GSTR-2B is a well-known trigger for a department notice and subsequent reversal demand with interest. Since GST rules increasingly restrict ITC claims to what's auto-populated from suppliers' filings, the safer practice is to follow up with the supplier to ensure they've filed their GSTR-1 correctly, rather than claiming unmatched credit and risking a reversal later.
